Skin Cancer at Age 23, and a Better Way to Tan Skin
“My body was not only changed by this scar, but my lifestyle too. If you want the tan glow, I highly recommend tanning foam. I found one that I love that allows me to look tan without the damage.”
The following story was not written by me. That’s not me in the pictures, either. It’s my beautiful neighbor, Kristen. She posted about this on her Instagram account and I texted her the second I saw it, and asked if she would write a blog post for me.
I just loved her message and wanted it to reach more people.
She also inspired me to order the tanning foam she uses, and I have been using it for the past 2 months and LOVE it. I’ll link to it at the bottom of this post.

On May 24, 2011, two weeks before my wedding, I received a call from my dermatologist that forever changed my life.
“The results came back as malignant melanoma.”
Skin cancer— the worst kind possible, was in my body. I was only 23 years young.
I remember when I was younger laying out by the beach or pool and having conversations about skin cancer and saying, “they will for sure have a cream to remove skin cancer by the time we are old enough to get it.” ??♀️ But that wasn’t the case.
Wow, was I naive, young, and dumb. If only I had someone I knew share the true realities of skin cancer and how ugly it can be. If it weren’t for me going to the dermatologist for something unrelated, this 3mm NORMAL looking mole wouldn’t have been removed and tested.
So, there I was, 23 years old, having to go into surgery to have skin layers removed all the way down to my muscle and leaving a permanent indentation and scar. Thank goodness they were able to remove the cancer entirely with surgery!
My body was not only changed by this scar, but my lifestyle too. Because I have a history of the most aggressive type of skin cancer, I now have to use extreme caution when doing outdoor activities in the sun. You know those people hiding under an umbrella at the beach or pool and being a sunscreen nazi with her kids? Yep, that’s me.
In addition to this lovely scar, I also have depigmentation as a result of my younger days of sun bathing/tanning, meaning parts of my skin have lost its pigment and I have tiny white speckles all over my body. I do not like my skin, but it’s the skin I chose to abuse and I will learn to love it in new ways.
I also have to go to the dermatologist every 6 months for the rest of my life to monitor my skin and have any new suspicious moles removed. I pray daily that skin cancer doesn’t come back and take me from my children and husband- because it CAN.
I pray that my story will be a reminder for you to wear sunscreen and avoid tanning salons at all costs!
SUNBATHING SHOULD NOT BE A SUMMER ACTIVITY!
If you want the tan glow, I highly recommend tanning foam. I found one that I love that allows me to look tan without the damage. Think twice before tanning- you are NOT exempt!✌?
The BEST Tanning Foam
Okay, it’s me again. Isn’t Kristen amazing? She is such an inspiring and beautiful woman, inside and out.
Once I read her story, I had to try this tanning foam. Holy crap, talk about a miracle! I have tried several tanning lotions over the years, but have never finished a bottle. It always goes on in streaks, and the worst part about it is the SMELL! It would be fine if I could put it on and then go take a shower, but you have to leave it on for several hours, and then you go around smelling like tanning lotion. There is no way to hide it. It is so potent and gross.
This tanning foam is THE EXACT OPPOSITE of all the lotions I have tried. It really is nothing short of amazing.
I use one pump for my lower leg, one pump for my thigh, and then do the same thing on the other leg. That’s it. So it lasts forever. It goes on SO much easier than lotion. There is ZERO orange tint. And my favorite part? The smell! It has a very light and natural smell, that doesn’t even hint at tanning lotion at all. It smells nice when you put it on, and all but disappears within about 5 minutes.
Thank you Kristen, for sharing your story and your gem of a find with this tanning foam! Love you, girl!
