I am not a fan of huge keychains. I like one or two smallish things to help me be able to find my keys when I reach my hand blindly into a pocket in my purse. But I don’t want the thing to weigh 3 pounds either. I like to be able to slip my keys into my pocket at the park, or when I go volunteer at the school, so I don’t have to take my whole purse with me.

I used to keep a pocket knife on my keys, but I have had so many of those things confiscated that I stopped buying them. I have had my pocketknife taken at an airport, a courthouse, a sporting event, and a theme park. I’m done buying pocket knives.
BUT! There is ONE thing that I will ALWAYS have on my keys. And it will never get taken away. It is the perfect size – hardly noticeable at all, and yet incredibly useful.
***UPDATE! I had a reader tell me they had one of these confiscated at a courthouse while entering for jury duty! WHAT?!?!? So, I guess some places may confiscate these. I have never had an issue with it. But I wanted to give you the information!***

MINI TAPE MEASURE!
Yep! You read that correctly.
I first found this little guy at the checkout counter at a toy shop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I just got it because I thought it was cute, and it was the cheapest thing in the store. Within an hour, I was wishing we were back at that toy store so I could buy 10 more of them. I waited 2 years til we were back, and I bought 5 more.
Then I got smart and looked on Amazon. DUH. So good news, guys! You don’t have to go to Jackson Hole to get these! All you have to do is click on this link and it will take you to the best $5 purchase you will ever make. Okay, maybe not. But I’d say it’s in the top 10 things I have found for $5. I love this thing.
***IMPORTANT NOTE: get THIS specific one. My keys got run over and my mini tape measure broke. Before I thought to look on Amazon, I replaced it with a different mini tape measure keychain I found at Home Depot while standing in line. It was okay, but it was SUPER bulky, and I kind of hated it. In fact, I ended up taking it off my key ring because it bugged me so bad. So be careful if you are looking at a different kind. Not all mini tape measure keychains are created equal. THIS ONE is the best!
I have used it…
- In the gymnastics parking lot to measure my daughter for a leotard
- At a furniture store to measure a couch
- In the backyard to measure a nightstand my husband was making
- At Joann/Michaels to measure craft stuff, countless times
- In my kitchen to measure my dishwasher when I was buying a new one
- In the car for my daughter to use on her math homework
- At the school to measure my kids’ teachers windows (see this post here on school lockdown kits)
- Countless places to keep a baby happy
- Countless places to keep a kid happy (yes, this has even mesmerized my 11-year-old on occasion)
These are just a few examples that have come to mind in the past 3 minutes. My point is, this thing has gotten more use than I thought it would.
And it’s $5.
And it’s teeny.
And it’s cute.
And it’s sleek and sexy.
And it’s useful.
And it’s just awesome.
And you can get one for about $5 on Amazon. However, they have a 6-pack for $16! (Just click on the 6-pack option instead of the single option)
I am a sucker for a deal, so I would get the 6-pack and put one on my keychain, one on my husband’s keychain, one on my daughter’s house keychain, and use the other 3 for stocking stuffers.
Yep! Another idea! Talk about a PERFECT STOCKING STUFFER!
This thing is the perfect size, perfect price, and perfect convenient buying location (wherever you are right now). My point? Get the 6-pack. You won’t regret it.
Okay, that’s my favorite thing to have on my key ring. What have you found that you wouldn’t leave your keys without? Comment below!
