Why you really need to organize your financial information

Consider these (probably) familiar scenarios:

  • You successfully filled your grocery cart, only to realize at the register that you can't use your usual credit card. And your screaming newborn and whiny toddler are making it impossible to recall your PIN number from memory for your debit card.

  • There was fraudulent activity with one of your bank cards, so it was replaced. And now you need to remember all of the automatic charges that are associated with that card so you can be sure to update all of them.

  • Tax season is miserable. But it wouldn't be if you were able to easily locate all of the documents you need to give to your accountant.

  • Your husband is on a backpacking trip and there is no cell service in the mountains. He manages the financial details of the household, and you get a surprise when the city shuts off your utilities.

  • Buying a home is a stressful process. Imagine what a relief it would be to confidently and efficiently provide all of your information to a loan officer at the first meeting.

These are just a few examples of why keeping all your financial records organized is such a big deal. I’m sure you could list a few more scenarios from your own experiences.

But what if you need an account login when you’re out running errands?  Or your spouse calls you as you’re heading into a meeting?

That’s the beauty of the Financial Information section of the Information Hub.  All the important details in a convenient digital format, stored where you want it and accessible when you need it.

What happens when you don't organize your Financial Information

My brother was a branch manger for a consumer bank for 15 years.  He is especially passionate about organizing and saving your financial information.  He has witnessed first hand the value of making it a priority.  Here’s what he said about having a front row seat to the devastation of not planning well:

It should be your bank’s goal to serve you.  And that often includes offering you assistance with tasks like recalling your account number.  But there are a lot of things that we cannot do for you as a result of security restrictions.

It is a heartbreaking experience to sit with a new widow (or widower) who has zero clue about their financial situation because their spouse handled everything.  Suddenly they have lost their best friend, and they don’t even know how to financially take care of themselves.

We can give them direction on what steps to take, but we cannot always provide the access that they need.

Instead of having time to grieve, they are instantly burdened with stress.

It is understandable that one spouse manages the finances because they enjoy it or are naturally gifted at it.  But I would strongly encourage that person to go a step further in serving their spouse by making sure that the financial information is organized and accessible.

It’s horrible to envision the sudden loss of a spouse.  But the reality is, we often do not have a warning.  It doesn’t matter whether you have debt or plenty of money.  The greatest gift we can give our loved ones and ourselves, is organized and accessible financial information.

Organizing Your Financial Records Can Be Easy

Starting to organize your financial information is just the beginning.  For most people, financial information is something you need to refer to on a regular basis.  And often, we are managing our accounts while on the go.
