Don't Forget To Protect Your Furry Family Members

You may be rocking the emergency preparedness game.  But what about your pets?  They are valuable members of your family, and they are totally dependent on you for their safety and well-being. In the event of an emergency, you might need to evacuate with your pet(s). As much as you might wish you could, it won’t work to just tuck them securely away in your 72-hour kit.   So I have the next best thing: their very own 72-hour kit, almost completely done for you!  And some helpful tips to consider beyond a well-stocked pack.

Ways to keep your pet safe in an emergency situation

Scary situations can happen without warning, so it is wise to prepare your pet for disasters.

Here are some suggestions to include in your planning process when you’re considering ways to keep your family pet safe in the event of an emergency.

If you’re looking at this list and panicking, don’t!  I’ve got you covered. Check out the Info Hub, which includes a Pet Documents PDF.

It will give you an organized, editable document that easily allows you to just input all of your important pet information and documents.  Then you can print it and tuck it into your pet’s 72-hour kit, and also digitally share it with anyone else who may be involved in providing care for your pet.

You need to practice how to evacuate with your pet

Having an emergency evacuation plan is good; including your pets when you practice the execution is even better.  They are going to be attuned to your emotions, so the more confident you are, the better the odds that they will cooperate.  This will help everyone stay safe.  The last thing you want is for your child risking their own safety for your pet.

  • Train your pets to go into and STAY inside their carriers.
  • Practice transporting your pet by taking them for rides in a car similar to one you would be evacuating in.
  • Know your pet’s favorite hiding spot when they’re stressed out or scared.  They will likely go there when they sense an emergency.
  • Be sure to involve your entire family in the evacuation practice. Everyone needs to know:

Ruff N Ready Pet Emergency Kit

I was so excited when I found these Ruff N Ready bags! They are just about the cutest things I’ve ever seen, and MAN ARE THEY DURABLE AND VERSATILE!

Pockets galore, elastic straps, velcro in all the right spots … it’s basically a dream.  I also love that it has a way to clip on to your own pack if needed.

They are so small and compact, that you could totally keep this thing in your trunk 24/7.  They even come with a few bare essentials.  You just need to add water, food, and whatever else you want specific to your own pet’s needs.

72-hour kit pack for dogs, collapsible water and food bowls, pet first aid kit, leash, etc.

What's Included In The Kit

  • Collapsible food bowl

  • Collapsible water bowl

  • First Aid Kit (gauze, Coband, wipes, and tweezers)

  • Emergency Blanket

  • Leash

  • Poop sacks

Additional Ruff N Ready Accessories

The Canine Emergency Kits are awesome because they are nearly complete.  Just add water, food, and whatever else you want specific to your own pet.

You can also purchase several individual items separately.

  •  Maybe you have two dogs, so you’d like to add a second leash to your pack.
  • Depending on your climate and terrain, the pet shoes could be a vital addition to your dog’s 72-hour kit.
  • You could be totally on top of this emergency preparedness thing and choose to order extra Basic Pet First Aid Kits to keep in your vehicles.
  • And if you’re in love with the bag itself, you can get those on their own.

How Do I Decide Which Pet Emergency Kit is Best for my furry friend?

The Ruff N Ready Canine Emergency Kits are available in 2 sizes.  The smaller one is recommended for dogs under 40 pounds, and the larger bag is recommended for dogs up to 180 pounds.  The size and capacity of the bags themselves are different.

The only difference in the actual contents included is the type of leash.  The small pack has a basic leash.  The larger pack has a multi-use leash, which features a locking carabiner, stretch fabric, seat belt clip, and neoprene handle.  Both leashes are available to purchase separately.

It really just comes down to how many extra supplies you’re hoping to add to the bag.  Does your pet need medication?  Does it have a lovey that you will need to use to coax your dog into the car?  Are you hoping to fit food or water inside the pack, or will it be in a separate container?

If you’re not sure, order one of each…you really can’t go wrong!  You may decide to move all of the gear to one bag and utilize the other for food and water.  Or just keep one with the 72-hour kits  and one in your vehicle.  You could also gift the one you don’t want – they make fantastic Christmas presents!
